How the Zoopedia Reveal Mechanism Works

Rather than announcing the full launch roster in one blow, Frontier used its official website’s Zoopedia — an online animal encyclopedia at planetzoogame.com — as a slow-drip reveal engine in the months before launch.

The mechanism is simple but effective:

  • A countdown timer sits at the top of the Zoopedia. It reads something like “3 Days until reveal,” ticking down to the next announcement. When it hits zero, new animals go live.
  • Reveals arrive in batches. Frontier typically dropped groups of animals at once — for example, a themed wave of eight species — rather than one per day. Community threads on Reddit and Frontier’s social posts tracked each wave, with fans speculating on silhouettes between drops.
  • Each revealed animal gets its own Zoopedia page with scientific name, taxonomic class and order, and conservation status, mirroring the in-game encyclopedia players use while building habitats.
  • Tags mark special content. Animals added in recent waves carry a “New” tag, while Deluxe Edition species are labeled “Deluxe,” which made it easy to separate the base roster from the upgrade pack content.

This drip-feed turned the pre-launch period into a community event: each reveal wave dominated discussion on the Planet Zoo subreddit, Discord servers, and fan wikis, with players planning entire zoos around species they hoped to see.

What Has Been Revealed

By launch, the Zoopedia listed 116 animal species — the complete launch roster across all editions. That total includes the six Deluxe Upgrade Pack species (Golden Eagle, Golden Lion Tamarin, Great Hammerhead, Axolotl, Blue and Gold Fusilier, and Longfin Batfish); the Standard Edition still ships with a roster well over one hundred strong.

The confirmed list spans an enormous range of animal classes: large mammals like the African Savannah Elephant and Western Lowland Gorilla, birds from Toco Toucans to Secretarybirds, reptiles and amphibians like the Komodo Dragon and Fire Salamander, and — a major expansion over the first game — dozens of fish and aquatic species for the new aquarium systems.

For returning Planet Zoo 1 players, the headline reveals were the aquatic additions. The first game’s Aquatic Pack added penguins, seals, and otters but never true underwater aquariums; Planet Zoo 2’s Zoopedia makes clear that sharks, rays, and reef fish are full habitat animals this time, not scenery. The reveal waves also confirmed deep cuts for longtime fans — Meerkats, Aardvarks, Sunda Pangolins, and a genuinely surprising invertebrate lineup including a Giant Amazonian Centipede and a Sacred Scarab Beetle.

How We Track Reveals and Updates

This site monitors the Zoopedia and Frontier’s announcement channels so you do not have to:

  1. The full animal list is our master table of every confirmed species, updated as new animals are announced.
  2. Individual animal pages go live as each species is confirmed — for example our pages for the Giant Panda, Komodo Dragon, African Wild Dog, and Blacktip Reef Shark.
  3. Post-launch additions — new species added through free updates or DLC — will be logged here and on our update tracker, which records every official patch note and content drop as Frontier publishes them.

If a countdown is currently running on the official Zoopedia, expect a new wave imminently; we update our pages within hours of a reveal going live.

Notable Confirmed Animals

Some species carry extra weight for returning players:

  • Aquatic megafauna. Sharks and rays — including the Blacktip Reef Shark and Ocellated Eagle Ray — headline the new custom aquarium systems, the biggest structural addition over Planet Zoo 1.
  • Aviary species. Eagles, hornbills, owls, and toucans confirm that walkthrough aviaries return, now with more bird species than ever.
  • Exhibit animals. Insects, arachnids, frogs, and snails fill the small exhibit buildings, including conservation-flagship species like the Golden Poison Frog and Giant Malaysian Leaf Insect.
  • Franchise-friendly megastars. Lions, tigers, gorillas, and elephants anchor the kind of marquee habitats that drive guest attendance in Franchise mode.

The Roster by the Numbers

The confirmed 116 species are not evenly spread across animal classes, and the imbalance is actually good news for gameplay variety:

  • Fish and aquatic species make up the largest single share of the roster — a dramatic change from Planet Zoo 1, where only a handful of aquatic animals existed and none had full aquarium habitats. Expect dozens of sharks, rays, schooling fish, and reef species.
  • Mammals remain the backbone of the terrestrial habitats, from hedgehog-sized small mammals to elephants and giraffes.
  • Birds span penguins, flamingos, eagles, owls, toucans, and hornbills, feeding both habitats and aviaries.
  • Reptiles and amphibians cover crocodilians, monitor lizards, snakes, turtles, salamanders, and frogs — many of them suited to exhibits rather than full habitats.
  • Invertebrates — butterflies, beetles, scorpions, spiders, centipedes, and snails — round out the roster and give exhibit buildings real depth for the first time in the series.

Where Reveals Are Announced

Frontier publicizes each wave through the Planet Zoo social accounts (X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) and the official forums. The Zoopedia countdown itself is the most reliable source — it updates automatically and cannot be missed if you check it directly. Community trackers on Reddit compile each wave into recap threads within hours, and fan wikis (this one included) fill in the details: habitat requirements, conservation status, and how each species slots into the game’s breeding and education systems.

Bookmark this page rather than the countdown itself. Once the full launch roster is revealed and post-launch content begins, the countdown mechanism may pause — but our trackers keep running, and this page will note the moment a new reveal cycle starts again.

To see how it all fits together at launch, read our beginner guide, compare the editions and their bonus species, and browse the complete animal roster — the most valuable planning resource on this site.
